When Women Pursue Justice
2005 – Artmakers, Inc, Brooklyn, New York
When Women Pursue Justice depicts ninety women who over the past one hundred and fifty years have worked for social change in the United States. These women often risked life and liberty to achieve voting rights, civil rights and racial justice., health and reproductive rights, environmental reform and protection, and rights for workers, immigrants and gays. The mural is dedicated to Shirley Chisolm, the late congresswoman and presidential candidate, and is located in the Bedford-Stuyvesant, her birthplace and the district she represented.
The mural project was led by Janet Braun-Reinitz (mural designer and lead artist) and Jane Weissman (project director and participating artist), and was a collaboration between twelve principal artists, five high school girls working as paid apprentices and over thirty volunteers and community residents.
